Markham Cast Iron Watermain Replacement

Project Description

Client: City of Markham

The City of Markham awarded Accardi Schaeffers a project that involved replacing approximately five kilometers of cast iron watermain with a 200-mm diameter PVC watermain that stretched across multiple streets including Southdale Dr., Walkerton Dr., Conservation Ave., Gladiator Rd., Drakefield Rd., Valleycrest Ave., Lakevista Ave., Banfield Ave., Willowgate Dr., Jocklyn Crt. and Bakerdale Rd. The major intersection near the project was Highway 7 and McCowan Ave.

The scope of the watermain replacement project involved the comprehensive upgrade of the existing infrastructure in the City of Markham. Key components of the project included the installation and disinfection of the new watermain, replacement of hydrants and valves to enhance system functionality, reinstatement of water service connections for individual properties, and upgrading substandard water services to street lines and ensuring compliance with safety standards. The overall objective was to improve the efficiency, reliability, and safety of the water distribution system in the city, aligning it with current regulatory standards.

The work included open-cut and Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) installation, hydrant and valve replacement, reinstatement of water service connections, and the replacement of substandard water to the street line.

DESIGNED

Five kilometers of cast iron watermain with a 200-mm diameter PVC watermain

PROVIDED

Cast iron watermain replacement, as well as site inspection and contract administration services

The project addressed significant challenges stemming from aging infrastructure, particularly an outdated cast iron watermain nearing the end of its lifespan. This watermain posed risks of corrosion and reduced reliability. Additionally, there were concerns about substandard sections in the water services to street lines, necessitating identification and replacement to enhance water quality and comply with safety standards.

Operational efficiency was another key objective, involving the replacement of hydrants and valves to improve system control, minimize leaks, and enhance the overall efficiency of the water distribution network.
